Converting an M7 Priest into Priest Kangaroo

28mm (1/56 scale)

Inspired by an iconic picture like this one, and after few days spent in historical researches (see my other article), I decided that such a piece (or two!) had to be included in my growing 51st Highland Division themed army.
Ispirato da una foto storica come questa, ho deciso che un pezzo così particolare non poteva non essere inserito nel mio esercito di scozzesi in 28mm (scala che prediligo da sempre per il wargaming)

So I decided to get myself a couple of M7 Priest from Warlord Games, makers of really amazing kits and historical games such Bolt Action
Ho quindi acquistato due modelli di M7 Priest in resina da Warlord la ditta inglese che produce tra gli altri Bolt Action.

After a close look, was time for action!
Dopo un'attenta ispezione sono passato all'azione!


Step 1. Interior Removal

Has been surely the hardest bit of the project, the resin kit has the shells boxes filled with ammunitions, and the mechanism holding the 105mm howitzer, so I had to remove everything.

After few unsuccessful trials with a simple cutter, i decided to get out my Dremel rotary tool, i then used various sanding grinding and sanding tools. After an hour or so i then reached a good level (I should have used a finer and finer dremel heads, but I ran out quickly and I don't have a good close hardware shop here around)

A very important tip is to use a mask of any sort to avoid to breathe those finely sanded resin powder you inevitably will make.

E' stata la fase più complicata, dopo qualche prova piuttosto insoddisfacente col taglierino da modellismo, ho preso in mano il mio fido mini trapano Dremel e ho applicato una piccola punta da smeriglio, e ho cominciato letteralmente a smerigliare gli interni dell'abitacolo. Dopo un'oretta di lavoro sono arrivato ad un buon livello, anche se a posteriori avrei potuto lisciare meglio con una punta più levigante. Un consiglio che mi sento di darvi è indossare mascherina e occhiali protettivi vista la grande quantità di segatura di resina che viene prodotta nel processo.

After an even closer look to other scale models, I finally went to the local model shop to get some 0,75 mm polystyrene (plasticard).

With a help of paper and scissors I made a template that helped me to cut the sides and the frontal parts into shape for extra protection.

I've used some greenstuff putty to simulate the welded areas around the edges (a bit exaggerated maybe, but makes a point and look good on the table)

Dopo un'approfondita ricerca e dopo aver scaricato innumerevoli foto di riferimento e dopo un viaggio al negozio di modellismo di fiducia, ho deciso di applicare il plasticard da 0,75mm per ricreare i pannelli frontali e laterali

Step 3. Details

Togheter with the Priest I bought a couple of stowage and tarp rolls kit and I had some fun to add them to my Kangaroos, I've added some rivets made from cheap chinese nail art gems (slightly too big, I should have used a smaller one)   

Canvas cover:

 after seeing this picture on the web, (this specific Kangaroo it's in Italy not Normandy to be honest), I decided to have one half covered with a canvas cover, so I got a metal wire bent and cut into shape, and glued on top some thick aluminum foil (from a bottle of prosecco neck!)

Assieme ai Priest ho acquistato un kit di borse e accessori addizionali e mi sono divertito a incollarli ai priest. Ho anche acquistato da un negozio di materiale economico cinese, un kit per nail art che ho usato come rivetti (un po troppo grandi in verità)

Sul tendalino:

Per differenziare i due ho deciso di prendere spunto da alcune foto che ritraevano alcuni Priest Kangaroo (in Italia in verità) con il tendalino di protezione per la pioggia. Ho quindi realizzato una barra centrale con un tondino di ferro, e applicato un triplo strato di carta d'alluminio da cucina incollata insieme con la colla vinilica, per realizzare il tendalino semi aperto.
